Masterworks
The Masterworks series, formerly called the Classics, will provide a dynamic range of repertoire and focus on two major themes. First, we will celebrate milestones from the past, including Beethoven's 250th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Second, we will unravel the identities of key American composers through their music. We believe this musical lens will provide insight, value and inspiration to each of us.

Title

Masterworks 8: Russian Passions

Description

James Lowe, Conductor

Joyce Yang, Piano

One of the best pianists of his generation, Rachmaninoff wrote Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini to showcase his own talent. This set of 24 variations on a theme by the 18th century virtuoso violinist includes the breathtaking music heard in the movie, Somewhere in Time. Tchaikovsky described his Sixth Symphony, nicknamed Pathétique - from the Russian word for "passionate" - as "the best thing I ever composed or shall compose." In it, Tchaikovsky transforms the traditional symphony, ending not with fanfare and joy, but with impassioned agony that fades into a whisper. Stravinsky's Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss is a tribute to Tchaikovsky, his childhood idol.

Notes

Igor Stravinsky - Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6, Pathétique
